From Sketch to Silver: The Artistic Journey
By Jake Harvey
My work often starts with a sketch—sometimes detailed, sometimes just a quick scribble in the corner of a notebook. From there, the design begins to grow in my mind. I think about how it will feel when worn, how light might catch on a polished edge, or how texture might add depth to its form.
Travel has always been a teacher. I’ve studied traditional metalsmithing in places as far apart as London, Mallorca, and Sydney, and found inspiration in the craft traditions of Mexico, Colombia, Egypt, and the American Southwest. Each place has its own voice—its own rhythm of metal, fire, and form—and those voices whisper into my work.
The journey from paper to polished piece is rarely linear. Sometimes, the metal itself changes my mind. And I love that—it’s a reminder that creation is a conversation, not a command.
