The Making of a Piece: Inside the Sydney Studio

The Making of a Piece: Inside the Sydney Studio

By Jake Harvey

Step into my studio and you’ll smell it before you see it—the faint tang of metal and flux, the scent of leather on the bench. My tools are well-worn but precise; each has its own story and its own mark on my work.

A piece begins as raw material—bronze, sterling silver, or gold—and slowly transforms through sawing, shaping, soldering, and polishing. Sometimes I’ll set a gemstone that catches my eye, other times I’ll let the form speak for itself.

Every stage demands focus. Metal doesn’t forgive impatience—it bends, warps, or cracks if you rush it. But that’s part of the joy: the process forces you to slow down, to be present, to let the piece evolve naturally.
